Diabetes And Diet

Diabetes responds to good food.  A diet  rich in nutrients your body needs for best health.  The great thing is, eating sufficient amounts of these delicious foods not only helps keep your blood sugar in control, it also helps keep your heart, your kidneys and your brain in good shape.

So, the link between diet and diabetes simply cannot be ignored.  So what are these “magic” foods?

Let’s start with fish.  Yuk, you say?  Sure, not everyone is crazy about fish, But we are talking about really good fish, rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.  How about cold water fishes like salmon?  Wild salmon, NOT farm raised.  Mahi mahi  whitefish   flounder  Yum!

For men, shellfish can be a great ingredient for good health.

Are you a little nutty?  I mean, do you like nuts – the kind you eat?  Walnuts and almonds, for example.  An ounce a day can work wonders.

If you are Italian, the next component for a diet and diabetes connection is an easy one.  Lycopene and folate, found in tomatoes, are very good for your blood sugar control, your heart, your brain.

Have you heard that oils are bad for you?  Some are – sure, so be selective.  Olive oil, flaxseed oil, avocados, fish oils – these are health powerhouses.

And, with all this, go real easy on the not so great foods for diabetes control.  Watch those starches that turn into sugar quickly in your body and jack your blood sugar.  White rice, white potatoes, white bread.  Sugared pastries, candies, even alcoholic drinks.  Moderation.  Moderation.
